I spied the Chicago Municipal Device on a CD I checked out from the Harold Washington library. It's a black & white ornate version, but you can see an updated version used on their Web site: http://www.chipublib.org/

I love these hidden gems and all of the meaning behind them. The city is full of them. Let's have a contest! Who knows the names and the meaning behind the following symbols? 1. The statue on top of the Board of Trade on LaSalle Street. 2. The statues of the warriors that flank Congress Ave. as it enters Grant Park. 3. The stars on the Chicago flag. Can you think of any others?

Wow - I love this! I think I recall hearing about the symbol long ago but lost track of the meaning. I especially love the name of it - The Chicago Municipal Device. So clinical. It would be fun to try to capture these in obscure places and see how many more are out there.
