Not sure about the bionic

Not sure about the bionic roaches - but I'd go down there for the gumbo. The people are still warm and friendly. And the food still as good as ever. What's especially great about N'awlins is the lack of crowds. You can enjoy the city at a less frantic pace. Like a drought leaves its mark on the tree rings of an old oak, Katrina has made an impression (Dixie Beer still hard to find outside of LA) - but the city hasn't missed a beat.

Yes, yes! Please visit NOLA!

Yes, yes! Please visit NOLA! Spend 1/2 a day with any locals if you can. Truly a unique and original culture down there. The culture in N.O. is one of a kind in this country (I guess) and may or may not ultimately survive the aftermath of what Katrina hath wrought. (many displaced, few returning) Also, I might recommend bringing a hammer and a crow bar. Just about all the religious organizations down there are robustly recruiting volunteers to help rebuild (or remediate mold). For a truly rewarding visit, spend a day (or two) stripping plaster off a 'shotgun' residence (watch out for the bionic roaches), and make it to French Quarter after dark, for some altogether more interesting wildlife.
